These are more pictures from my field trip. This is another building by Zaha Hadid. It is a restaurant located in a desolate part of Germany. The setting is much different than I imagined from the pictures, but it gives it a very surreal presence. Next door to the restaurant there just happened to be this really really cool artists’ atelier (studio) that was made out of an old farm mill. It was the coolest work setting I have ever seen. There was an installed turn-stile(is that how you spell it?) serving as the entrance and a series of interesting stairs that went above the building to give an incredible view of Zaha’s building plus the rest of the landscape. The picture in the bottom left corner of the ramp that runs on top and past the length of the building is one of the reasons that I have become so ramp crazy in my design lately, just to let you know.

These are more pictures of the Zaha Hadid building in Germany and the studio adjacent to it, plus a random picture of me that Carl took when he was using my video camera.

My week is over, thank goodness. It was a pretty hard one, but they are only getting tougher from here (but that is ok because I do much better under pressure -hee hee). Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving…I know I will probably be eating leftovers for awhile. I will post Thanksgiving pictures soon, so look for them…

after three days of looking at art and architecture, we still look pretty good, huh? (just kidding) I wish Thomas had gotten the background in the picture because the view was amazing. I am sure I will post a picture of it soon, but time is limited now, school work due tomorrow, yada yada yada.

So there is a strike of almost every kind in Paris today…It took me an hour to get home on the metro, and I had a man’s butt pressed against my stomach (he was a really tall man)the whole way, because it was so crowded. But evidently the train I take was not bad at all compared to the rest, like the one that goes to the airport (Wes takes that one and it took him 1 and a half hours to get to school this morning after rush hour). “We strike” in French apparently is, “On greve” (with an accent over the first e) and it is definitely a great part of the French culture. I am integrating it into my own standards for living, so if you guys see me some time later on in life holding up a sign marching in a circle holding a sign that says, “Je greve” (meaning “I strike” - don’t forget the accent over the first e) then you know what it means.

These images are from my field trip last weekend. We stayed in this very small town in eastern France one night. It had one hotel with one pub next door, but that didn’t stop us. It was also our first night hanging out with some of the foreign students, but others (like Leo and Thomas -left picture) we can’t seem to get rid of (just kidding). They found out that my boyfriend would see this picture, so they decided to have fun with the camera, and me, just before it flashed. The other picture is me, Jessica, and Catarina (she is Greek) just hanging out in Jessica’s room before we went out.

My friend Tim just left this morning. We had a great visit, and went to some museums that I haven’t ventured into before. This past Thursday was the New Beaujolais Day, sort of a holiday in France that happens every year when the year’s wine comes out for purchase. People begin drinking even in the morning to taste the new beaujolais. Our school cafeteria had a party for it - 80 cents per glass or $5 per bottle. It is a pretty interesting concept to see people walking into class with a glass of wine or beer. It is not really considered alcohol, just another typical drink, during daytime at least.

This is my class…all the Americans at least, in front of the Beyeler Foundation - architect Renzo Piano. It is in Basel, Switzerland. They have a great collection of art and a gorgeous landscape. We had a great time on this trip. I will post up more pictures next week (they are all saved on Candace’s computer and she went to Amsterdam, so just wait a few more days). Tim, Jimmy, and I are going to spend the day in museums, so have a nice day and until next time, same bat time, same bat channel….

This building is in Wil em Rhein, Germany, on the border of Switzerland. Obviously, she is one of my favorite architects, designing from an empirical viewpoint. She uses the human’s preconceptions of space to alter the space, and thus the user is tricked by the space. She uses sharp angles and usually no perpendicular edges to further intensify the user’s experience in the space. In the series of interior pictures, you see the same hallway from each end. The floor seems to rise, but it is really the ceiling that is rising while the ground remains flat. Especially on the interiors, she concentrates on intensifying your perspective view of the space by drawing the lines ultimately together into a point.

Did I mention that this was her first big building commission…not bad huh?

There will definitely be more to come soon, but right now I have to save my dinner from the hands of Becky (she got impatient with me and is trying to cook by herself - eek!).

I realize that since I just got this website up and running, I must back up a little bit to show you guys where I live. So this is my apartment kitchen and Becky’s bedroom (mine is always messy and this picture was already taken, sorry). As you can see, our kitchen is cute but very small. Our bedrooms are a decent size though, and we have a great view.

My trip this weekend was fun. Hope to have some pictures and videos up soon. if I can figure out how to shrink the videos that is…

I just thought I would share this picture with all of you, not to brag because he’s mine or anything. So now you know he’s cute AND he can fix all my computer problems. And I might as well use this site as yet another way to boost his ego, considering he has done more work for it than I have, plus he probably looks at it more than anyone else. And for those of you who were complaining because Quinn had no current pictures of himself on his website, you can just look at this one from now on. hm!

So we are going to Switzerland in the morning…very early I might add - grrrr….but it will be really fun. As usual I haven’t packed, and I have cardboard all over my room left over from my studio project, so my goal tonight is to clean up, pack, wash clothes, and go to bed early, because I will not be sleeping on the bus (the bus will be filled with 60 kids who speak different languages). Plus, my friend Tim Aubin will be here next week so I must give him somewhere to sleep besides on top of a pile of cardboard.

thugseries (47k image)

as if you didn’t already know this if you know either one of us. This is a series of pictures, in chronological order, of our progression and revision of thug poses. Our gang signs were very general at first, but as you might be able to see, they develop into personal representations of ourselves. Since all of these pictures are very old, like at least a month, we don’t have any more. We have moved on to a new genre of people to imitate…the British. Becky is teaching me her skills so that I may be trilingual as well (French is my second language).
By the way, the first picture was taken at a bar one night, the second at Mont St. Michel (we had to pose three times because Janice was taking the picture), and the third at the top on Printemps.
